Date: 21-23 Sep 2022
Time: 11:00AM - 5:00PM

Location: The ALcove

“Old Books, New Stories'' is a project brought to you by SOSCIETY’s Community Service Department in collaboration with Books Beyond Borders.

  • Book Donation Drive for gently-used books — donation bins will be placed at their booth in the ALcove so students can drop off their books anytime. Once the bin is full, our members will empty it to sift through the books and decide which books are suitable for donation. These books will then be sent to Books Beyond Borders via courier.

  • Aim to raise awareness and promote recycling and reusing books in SMU. Despite a book not being new, it still can be read and given a new life when it is passed on. We wish to build a world where everyone has an equal opportunity to access knowledge, a quality education, and become lifelong learners

Books Beyond Borders is a non profit organisation which collects and sells gently-used books. The aim of their company is to combat global illiteracy and provide more opportunities for students beyond borders to receive a higher quality education.

SMU Libraries  Pop-up Fashion Waste Recycling Station

Date: 21-23 Sep 2022

Time: 12:00PM - 6:00PM

Location: The Hive, Li Ka Shing Library

Walk-in event; drop in anytime. You can bring a clothing item or two you’d like to mend or repair. Renew Earth Sweat Shop sets up a pop-up station where you can get involved in rescuing fashion and textile waste.

Be part of the Sweat Shop’s effort to transform 500 kg of fashion waste. Drop in to learn and engage in various recycling processes, including creating fabric yarns, and salvaging reusable items + fabric from discarded clothing. You can also bring some love back to old clothes — your own or the Sweat Shop’s—through hands-on repair and mending.

Renew Earth Sweat Shop is a community and participatory art project reacting to the environmental impact and labour conditions linked to the global fashion industry. The project attempts to ‘reverse’ sweatshops—to become what a sweatshop is not, to counter waste, rethink labour and ultimately to renew our earth.
